Time to turn the page

Nobody will ever mistake me for a rose-colored-glasses Mets fan. I tend to lean way way to the pessimistic. Now with camp open though it’s time to turn the page. While I fully admit Mets fans will never forget the last few seasons, it’s time to put them in the past.

How can we expect the team to put it behind then, how can we create a new “culture” and chart a new direction for the franchise if we as fans and bloggers constantly harp on the negative. I’m a married man, and I am far from perfect, and if my wife continually harped on all the stupid stuff I’ve have done in the past, the future wouldn’t be a happy one. Instead you learn from the little issues and create a great future together. Much can be the same with the Mets. Lets hope that the Mets can learn from the past and use it as motivation. A new page is being written now with the new front office, a transition that I love and have high hopes for in the long run.

As a website I want to start to focus our attention on the field. As fascinated as I am with the entire Madoff story, it really wont have any(more) effect on this current team so I will try to put that to the back burner. It’s a huge story, and one I will personally follow closely, but I will promise to not let it effect the day-to-day operations of the team … blog.

Lets have fun and watch some baseball. It’s a great time of year. Take realistic expectations and try to find storylines you want to follow closely this season. For me I am really anxious to see what Thole and Davis can do in Year 2. I am a youth/prospect guy so I love to watch players develop. Find the little niches that will interest you day to day, I find it helps a lot and can draw you into the team even more.

Spring training 2011 is upon us, so let’s play ball.

This is F’N RIDICULOUS!

I jokingly was knocking Brian the other day about being too negative about the team. But watching this game against the Nats and watching Castillio hit into a double play, I just can’t take these stats they are spewing out about the Mets with runners on.

They are batting .228 with RISP, .185 with the bases loaded. Tonight they are 2-11 with RISP alone. Reyes (.314 slugging percentage) Manuel’s go-to guy in the third hole has just flown out twice with men on third.

Here’s a great stat in 1,242 plate apperances this year, they have left 232 men on base. Whether this is encouraging or not they have only grounded into 18 double plays. Take that for what it is.

Tonight they got on base with the first at bat 6 times in 8 innings as of writing this, but only have 2 runs against the Nats, the Nats!!! 12 hits, 2 runs as of now. I know I’m rambling but I had to rant. For a positive, seeing Wright get two opposite field doubles has been nice.

Jenrry Mejia will make opening day roster

It looks like 20 year old spring training phenom Jenrry Mejia is going to make the Mets opening day roster.  In what role nobody knows but it looks like he will come north with the club and be a part of their opening day bullpen.

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com (launches Friday) has reported that Sean Green and Bobby Parnell will be demoted to AAA.  Probably more because they have options left then entirely on performance, though Green hasn’t looked very good this spring.

This would probably mean, as MetsBlog points out, that Nelson Figueroa will make the roster as well.  This is good in my eyes cause Figgy has pitched well and affords the Mets a lot of options with the way he can be the long man out of the pen and also make a spot start in an emergency.  I also have a soft spot for Figgy as he’s a guy that really wants to play in New York.

That would leave one spot to be occupied by either Mejia or Kiko Calero.  Calero has pitched fairly well and despite his late addition to the squad has shown improvements each week.  I would still have to lean to Mejia making the club as he has largely been dominant this spring, and is potentially the best fit as an 8th inning guy.  I’d like to see him matched up against batters that have already seen him a few times to see if they are able to figure him out at all.  At this point I am ok with bringing Mejia up.  I would rather see him in AAA for more seasoning but the fact is he is the best option and starting him in AAA would downgrade the big club.

Obviously nothing is 100% at this point, but this is the way it’s looking like it will shake out.

Reyes cleared to begin swinging

Mike Puma reported today for the NY Post that Jose Reyes is set to begin taking swings and other baseball activities. After 4 days of running and general conditioning, Jose feels his legs are back under him enough for him to start advancing to the next stage of his delayed spring training.

Reyes is expected to soon begin playing simulated games against Mets’ minor leaguers, giving him a chance to get several at-bats a day against live pitching. That could be the last step before making his Grapefruit League debut later this week.

But the Mets and Reyes are still playing it cool, saying there is no timetable in place, either for Reyes’ spring training or season debut. The Mets open the season a week from tomorrow, when they face the Marlins at Citi Field.
“We’ll continue to follow the program the physical therapy people have,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “Now we’re able to incorporate him into team activities, which is good.”

This is great news as it gives Jose about week to play in those simulated games and shake the rust off the rest of his game. As much as I want to see him in uniform on opening day, I really hope they do not rush him, nor do they allow him to rush himself. It’s much more important that he is there for play games 4-162 then it is for him to be in those first few games. A setback now could really crush morale.

Make sure you check out the NYPost Mets Blog as they do good work and it’s always informative.

Mejia, Davis could prove to be Amazin finds

Spring training is a great time of year for a baseball fan.  Hope springs eternal.  Your team can be anything you can dream up.  One of the best parts of spring training is taking a look at your teams future.  You get to see the next generation out on the field wearing the blue and orange.

For the Mets the talk of this spring training has been almost totally focused on the promise of both Ike Davis and Jenrry Mejia.  It’s unilaterally accepted that both have bright futures, the question is whether that future is now or not.

Mike Vaccaro of the NY Post writes a great article about how these two phenoms could turn out to be “amazin” finds.

It’s what happens once everyone arrives that makes the spring fun. It’s watching Ike Davis blast baseballs toward spots at Tradition Field that only a select few sluggers have ever reached before.

It’s watching Jenrry Mejia sling baseballs toward opposing hitters with velocity that steals breath and breaking balls that buckle knees

It’s a great read with your cup of coffee on Sunday morning so give it a read!

Catcher Revisited: Rowdy Rod Barajas

As spring training fast approaches I want to go around-the-horn on the projected Mets opening day lineup position by position. I will talk about my thoughts on how that position matches up and how it should be handled. Hope you enjoy.

I have already covered the Mets catching position two weeks ago when I said that Josh Thole is our only real hope, funny how two weeks later we have an entirely new catching corps. I shall henceforth refer to Rod Barajas as “Rowdy Rod Barajas.” Why? Not sure really. I don’t even know if he’s a gritty type of player, truth is I don’t know much about him, but since I am kind of “blah” about his signing I wanted to spice it up a bit and have some fun writing about him, thus the fun with names.

I have serious misgivings about Barajas as our everyday catcher. I mean how is it that the first contract you offer the guy is a minor league deal, and a week later he’s your starting catcher? Now I am not one that is crying in my Cheerios cause we didn’t sign Molina, I didn’t think he ever wanted to come here anyway, and I felt he was fat, slow, and not worth the money. Then I start taking a deeper look at Barajas and I start to wonder if these guys might be cousins?

There are good sides to his signing. He is a bona fide big league catcher. He is a good backstop and he has worked with premiere pitchers before (Doc Halladay for one). So he has that track record and that’s plenty more then any of the other of the Mets Motley Crew behind the plate (Blanco, Coste, Santos, Thole). Perhaps the biggest upside is that this allows the Mets to keep Thole down in AAA for the season. Thole’s bat sure looks like it’s ready for the major leagues, but I think everyone has serious doubts about his defensive ability, and nobody really knows about his game strategy.

Barajas is a stop-gap player for 2010, nothing more, nothing less. I actually took a liking to the guy when I heard his first interview and he openly admitted his weaknesses (striking out too much) and how he learned a lot by working with Halladay in Toronto. When you step back and take a look at what was out there, and what the Mets options really were (again I don’t think Molina had any intentions of coming to NY) then Barajas is about as good as could have been done. Sad, yes, but it’s the reality. Truth is the Mets had big holes, in a small market, and that’s just unfortunate.

Mets fans need to prepare themselves to the fact that we may just have to take 2010 as a bad dose of medicine if things go wrong. The plan should be to let players mature in AAA and do not rush them up. Take 2010 on the chin, hey what’s another embarrassment when your the NY Mets anyways? Let Ike Davis, Josh Thole, Jenry Mejia, et al, play a full year at AAA to hone their games, and to get to know each other. This is hopefully the class of 2011.

Rowdy Rod, just call a good game, be a reliable backstop, and give us a punchers chance in the batters box and provide some pop.

Recap: Spring Training Game #1: Mets 4, Braves 2

The Mets opened their 2010 season with a win, so what if it doesn’t count, a wins a win. With the perception that we have as a losing club, I feel it is important for us just to get that mojo going early and often. That SNY music intro and Gary’s monologue always gives me chills. Great to hear Gary, Keith and Ron who can make any game, even Spring Training games exciting.

Now for those you of who missed the SNY showing of our Metsies, Ike Davis and Nelson Figueroa were the stories today. Ike Davis has 2 hits including the first extra base hit for the club when he doubled in the fifth. Nelson Figueroa pitched two scoreless innings and got himself out of trouble by striking out the side with 2 on in the 2nd. The Mets were held scoreless by phenom Tommy Hanson and look out Met fans for Jason Heyward, who is going to be the next guy from Atlanta for us to hate.

The Mets will take their 1 and 0 record to Lake Buena Vista tomorrow to once again play against the Bravos at 1:10 eastern, 10:10 am for people like myself. The expected starters are Pat Misch and Tim Hudson, the game will be shown live on MLB.TV.

Let’s Play Ball!

Let’s Play Ball!

The New York Mets kick off their spring training schedule today at Tradition Field taking on the Atlanta Braves. Listen I understand I wont see many big players, but I am just happy to have baseball again. It’s been a long, cold, snowy winter here in NY and the start of baseball signals we are getting close to spring!!!

I am just as excited to see my old friends again: Gary, Keith, and Ron on the SNY broadcast.

Mike’d Up from PSL

As a relocated New Yorker, I sometime have to do things I don’t like to, to get my New York Sports news. One of those things is listening to the Anti-Mets, Mike Francesa show. If you want more of my opionion on Mike, please check my previous blog “Francesa: Agenda vs. Murph.” However, it is enjoyable to see Mike brownnose players he constantly bashes when he pays his yearly visit to Port St. Lucie for Mets camp.

For those of you that have much more to do then listen to six hours of Mike, I thought I would give you a summary of today’s show. I’ll also add some commentary of what is going on in my head while I listen to the show.

Niese interview: Mike starts off with a diss to the Mets saying he can’t remember games from last year, as all the losses blended together. Some hockey talk I don’t care about, he finally starts talking pitching with Niese. Nothing new here as we learn Niese has been working hard and wants to be the fifth starter. Niese did pitch 2 innings of no hit ball in the intrasquad game Monday.

Pagan interview: Mike asks Pagan if he has to battle Matthews, Jr. for the starting spot. Didn’t Jerry say the other day that Pagan is the starter as long as he doesn’t get hurt? While I’m waiting for something good, I do like to point out, its pretty cool guys like Bay and Pagan who grew up in our farm system are back here and getting playing time. Mike points out how well Pagan hit at Citi last year and that he was a triple machine at Citi. Mike and Angel are actually getting along pretty well, guess it’s cuz Mike is too busy bashing Murph to say a bad word about Angel. Angel seems extremely confident that the team is going to be good this year, he’s brought it up 3 times so far. Pagan also feels he is an everyday player, boy I hope so, it would be nice to Jerry to be able to spell CB, Bay and Frenchie so we are not beaten down by the end of the season. Pagan’s fave players include Bernie and Beltran. Nice plug there for Brendon and any other Yank fans reading this.  Mike called him An-hel as they leave, dunno bout that as I trust Gary Cohen for everything Mets and he says An-gel.

Is it me or does it seem like WFAN has alot more commerical time when you watch it on TV as compared to when I listen on the radio? I do miss Giuseppe Franco and Billy Mays.

Barajas interview: Barajas tell us he is a defensive catcher first. We could definitely use someone to help these guys on the mound. I never trusted Brian Schneider, I think this is a very undervalued move and will pay off for us. I get chills thinking Barajas could add 20 homers to our lineup. You think Rod can give the Mets a good scouting report of Doc Halladay? Barajas thinks very highly of him and hopefully Barajas can push Santana to work as hard as he says Halladay does. Mike talks Yanks with Rod, is this Mets coverage or not? A good question is how long will it take for Rod to get to know his staff and Rod answers that he should have a good knowledge of his guys by the end of spring training. Rod is extremely excited to play in NY which he has brought up several occasions. I don’t know why someone wouldn’t wanna play where people care about baseball.

em>Alex Cora interview: Let’s face it, we are paying him 2 mill to be a 2nd manager for this club. Before his thumb injuries though he provided decent backup but he is not an everyday player. More Yankee talk,ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, great Burnett threw awesome vs. us….can we talk about the Mets please? Still talking about injuries… Cora says the vibe is much better then last year, didn’t we hear the vibe was good last year? I go crazy about how we always hear the same stuff during spring training. We worked hard, im ready, great vibe, nonsense just win some games in April for me.

Keith Hernandez interview: MEX, finally I am pumped for an interview. God this guy is so cool, he makes a bright orange flower shirt look good. Keith was nominated for an EMMY….congrats Keith!!! Keith talks about tutoring Murph. Keith says he was surprized Ike was not there. Keith says 1b is a lefty position and hard to teach a right hander. Mike has a good idea about first baseman being much more important then people think. Mex talks about his 1b philosophy, great job, he makes me want to find my old glove and work on balls in the dirt. Keith should be a coach, it is too bad he likes things like vacations, the beach and drinking and eating. Keith likes Murph’s agressiveness and his hands and thinks he did a great job for someone who never played the position before. Keith feels that guys with down years will comeback motivated, but was surprized they did not go after pitching. Bullpen is a question for him as well. Love that Mex refers to the Mets as “us.” Mike takes some more shots at Murph and Keith using the class that he knows says that Keith had the same questions about himself when he was a young player. Mike talks about how good the Yanks are how bad it is for the Mets to be the “little brother.” Did I mention I cannot stand this show without Doggie? Mike can really give some good opinions when he doesn’t show that Yankee bias mentioning how Rivera gets bored like KROD did last year. Keith mentioned you must adjust to the ballpark, pitching, speed and defense. Keith senses a better attitude and think Franceour, Barajas and Bay are the reason. Keith likes the comeback and points out we have 5 guys that could win comeback player of the year.

Jay Bay: Talks about how he feels right at home as part of the clubhouse. Mike brings up the Mets are going back to pulling the ball and doing what the do best, as opposed to last year’s oppo philosophy. Boston prepped Bay for what he will face in NY. I like this guy, I take back ever thinking they shouldn’t have. Bay compliments Manuel and says his preseason speech was sincere. Pretty cool to hear about the guys going to the bar and watching the Olympics. Man how cool would it be to put down some frosties with the Metsies.

Gary Matthews Jr. interview: Wants to play everyday, glad to get change of scenery. Points out he had 50 RBIs in 300 AB’s last season. GMJ has not been talked to about his role and wants to be the opening day starter. GMJ wants to win a series title.

Minaya interview: Excited abou Barajas. Escobar is not looking good, club is still looking at free agent relievers. Omar believes in the 3 amigos (Ollie, Maine and Pelf) Niese is Omar’s favorite for the 5 spot. Ike Davis is a long shot he says, says he is ready defensively. Jacobs is here as the job is not being handed to Murph. Omar thinks Reyes batting 3 is a good move and he is likely to be a 3 hitter later in his career. Omar believes in this team, he better or he won’t be around long. Omar says Beltran is most likely back in May or June, if things go well. Sounds like this is going to be more then 40 games.

Murph: Interesting, very interesting to see how this goes. Murph is the first player that is actually sitting next to Mike. Mike points out that he did not live up to the hype that was given to him last season and that he bombed in left field. Murph batted .282 in the 2nd half last season again with no protection. Murph continually says he doesn’t care about stats he just wants to help the team win. Murph says it took 2 months to adjust to the pitchers adjusting to him and that the pitchers would not allow him to go opposite field as he has liked in his minor league career. Mike is trying to be nice but Murph just seems like he does not like him and is uncomfortable being next to him. Murph leaves by telling him to not talk so bad…lol….good job by Murph there.

All in all, not bad to watch, each day I listen to Mike I continue to dislike him more and more but nice to see alot of the guys and definitely has me pumped to watch the game today!!!
