Enthusiasm Is Contagious

As I watched the post-game show yesterday on SNY and heard all of the people yelling “Let’s Go Mets” behind Carlin and Ojeda, I could only think how enthusiasm is contagious. We Met fans need to be positive, every game, period. If we lose a tough one the night before, big deal, get over it and let’s get that winning streak to 1 the following night. Positivity can go a far way people.

I know we don’t hit the ball or field it but I really think we have more power then you may realize. As I recently talked about in my blog, Be Positive People, we need Citi Field to be a home field advantage. We want opposing players to hate coming to Flushing and we want our own to love playing for the Flushing Faithful. I think over the past years with all the negativity going around, our players probably hate being at home and probably enjoy being on the road better. I think that is just terrible, we need to Citi to shake and to intimidate opposing clubs.

Think about the 1986 club, they are beloved and rightfully so but these guys are hit with a lovefest everytime they are seen in Queens. I don’t think this is a bad thing, I adore them too but I feel we also need to do this with our current club. I think after the past three seasons they need some love. I look at these guys as my family and when things go against my family, I don’t turn on them, I only get louder and support them more. I hope some of you can understand that, I really feel that some love may go along way with this club.

I understand booing is a part of being a New York sports fan but next time you are at a game take a look and realize it is much more fun to harass Jimmy Rollins, Chipper Jones or Hanley Ramirez. I think we, the fan can help get this black cloud away from the team, and it can start with us being enthusiastic and cheering on this club and letting them know we want them to succeed. So when you find yourself at a game, grab a cold one, bring some friends, stand up and as loud as you can YELL LET’S GO METS, I will be back in June to join you!

Mets Video Of The Day

Here’s going along with my positive thoughts!!!

WE BELIEVE!!!

I’m so excited for today, let’s go JOHAN!!!!!!!

Mets Projected Lineup

Well with a few days left we are looking at the projected lineup for the 2010 New York Mets.  I am looking at the opening day lineup and also next week when Reyes comes back, I will also give my two cents on a lineup and hopefully if I did it right will have a poll for you as well.  Here we go:

1. CF Angel Pagan

2. 2B Luis Castillo

3. 3B David Wright

4. 1B Mike Jacobs

5. LF Jason Bay

6. RF Jeff Francouer

7. C Rod Barajas

8. SS Alex Cora

9. P Johan Santana

Well obviously Reyes will be at the top of the order when he come back, basically my biggest gripe is Jacobs batting fourth.  yes he has a big bat but also has the penchant for hitting .220.  Now with Wright, Jacobs, Bay & Frenchy you are looking at a good 400 K’s.  But at least with Wright & Bay you have .300 hitters.  Really there is no reason that Bay shouldn’t be protecting Wright or the other way around.  When Beltran comes back you know he slides into the 4 hole, and that could be a great 1-2-3 punch.  Personally when Beltran comes back I would do this:

1. SS Jose Reyes

2. CF Carlos Beltran

3. 3B David Wright

4. LF Jason Bay

5. RF Jeff Francouer

6. 1B Mike Jacobs

7. C Rod Barajas

8. 2B Luis Castillo

Now I know there is talk about lefty, righty matchups but I say screw that.  get your best hitters up there and let them have at it.  Let’s be honest I don’t think the Mets are going to be in too many 1-0 ballgames.  And the reason for batting Beltran second he can utilize his speed and not ask him to do too much in the power department.  Let him move Reyes over and he has a real patient eye and gives Reyes time to reek havoc and it will also give Beltran good pitches to hit with Reyes on the pitchers mind and Wright & Bay behind him.  So basically it’s my call to Jerry, take Jacobs out of the four hole right about nowish.

Opening Day is coming….

If you get to Mets.com you will see with Spring training games underway, the ticker has been changed to how many days til Opening Day which is now at 33 days, 11 hours and 9 minutes, I mean 8 minutes, you get the idea…anyways for those of you who cannot wait for Opening Day, definitely a good way to keep track of how fast winter is flying away….LGM

Mike’d Up from PSL

As a relocated New Yorker, I sometime have to do things I don’t like to, to get my New York Sports news. One of those things is listening to the Anti-Mets, Mike Francesa show. If you want more of my opionion on Mike, please check my previous blog “Francesa: Agenda vs. Murph.” However, it is enjoyable to see Mike brownnose players he constantly bashes when he pays his yearly visit to Port St. Lucie for Mets camp.

For those of you that have much more to do then listen to six hours of Mike, I thought I would give you a summary of today’s show. I’ll also add some commentary of what is going on in my head while I listen to the show.

Niese interview: Mike starts off with a diss to the Mets saying he can’t remember games from last year, as all the losses blended together. Some hockey talk I don’t care about, he finally starts talking pitching with Niese. Nothing new here as we learn Niese has been working hard and wants to be the fifth starter. Niese did pitch 2 innings of no hit ball in the intrasquad game Monday.

Pagan interview: Mike asks Pagan if he has to battle Matthews, Jr. for the starting spot. Didn’t Jerry say the other day that Pagan is the starter as long as he doesn’t get hurt? While I’m waiting for something good, I do like to point out, its pretty cool guys like Bay and Pagan who grew up in our farm system are back here and getting playing time. Mike points out how well Pagan hit at Citi last year and that he was a triple machine at Citi. Mike and Angel are actually getting along pretty well, guess it’s cuz Mike is too busy bashing Murph to say a bad word about Angel. Angel seems extremely confident that the team is going to be good this year, he’s brought it up 3 times so far. Pagan also feels he is an everyday player, boy I hope so, it would be nice to Jerry to be able to spell CB, Bay and Frenchie so we are not beaten down by the end of the season. Pagan’s fave players include Bernie and Beltran. Nice plug there for Brendon and any other Yank fans reading this.  Mike called him An-hel as they leave, dunno bout that as I trust Gary Cohen for everything Mets and he says An-gel.

Is it me or does it seem like WFAN has alot more commerical time when you watch it on TV as compared to when I listen on the radio? I do miss Giuseppe Franco and Billy Mays.

Barajas interview: Barajas tell us he is a defensive catcher first. We could definitely use someone to help these guys on the mound. I never trusted Brian Schneider, I think this is a very undervalued move and will pay off for us. I get chills thinking Barajas could add 20 homers to our lineup. You think Rod can give the Mets a good scouting report of Doc Halladay? Barajas thinks very highly of him and hopefully Barajas can push Santana to work as hard as he says Halladay does. Mike talks Yanks with Rod, is this Mets coverage or not? A good question is how long will it take for Rod to get to know his staff and Rod answers that he should have a good knowledge of his guys by the end of spring training. Rod is extremely excited to play in NY which he has brought up several occasions. I don’t know why someone wouldn’t wanna play where people care about baseball.

em>Alex Cora interview: Let’s face it, we are paying him 2 mill to be a 2nd manager for this club. Before his thumb injuries though he provided decent backup but he is not an everyday player. More Yankee talk,ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, great Burnett threw awesome vs. us….can we talk about the Mets please? Still talking about injuries… Cora says the vibe is much better then last year, didn’t we hear the vibe was good last year? I go crazy about how we always hear the same stuff during spring training. We worked hard, im ready, great vibe, nonsense just win some games in April for me.

Keith Hernandez interview: MEX, finally I am pumped for an interview. God this guy is so cool, he makes a bright orange flower shirt look good. Keith was nominated for an EMMY….congrats Keith!!! Keith talks about tutoring Murph. Keith says he was surprized Ike was not there. Keith says 1b is a lefty position and hard to teach a right hander. Mike has a good idea about first baseman being much more important then people think. Mex talks about his 1b philosophy, great job, he makes me want to find my old glove and work on balls in the dirt. Keith should be a coach, it is too bad he likes things like vacations, the beach and drinking and eating. Keith likes Murph’s agressiveness and his hands and thinks he did a great job for someone who never played the position before. Keith feels that guys with down years will comeback motivated, but was surprized they did not go after pitching. Bullpen is a question for him as well. Love that Mex refers to the Mets as “us.” Mike takes some more shots at Murph and Keith using the class that he knows says that Keith had the same questions about himself when he was a young player. Mike talks about how good the Yanks are how bad it is for the Mets to be the “little brother.” Did I mention I cannot stand this show without Doggie? Mike can really give some good opinions when he doesn’t show that Yankee bias mentioning how Rivera gets bored like KROD did last year. Keith mentioned you must adjust to the ballpark, pitching, speed and defense. Keith senses a better attitude and think Franceour, Barajas and Bay are the reason. Keith likes the comeback and points out we have 5 guys that could win comeback player of the year.

Jay Bay: Talks about how he feels right at home as part of the clubhouse. Mike brings up the Mets are going back to pulling the ball and doing what the do best, as opposed to last year’s oppo philosophy. Boston prepped Bay for what he will face in NY. I like this guy, I take back ever thinking they shouldn’t have. Bay compliments Manuel and says his preseason speech was sincere. Pretty cool to hear about the guys going to the bar and watching the Olympics. Man how cool would it be to put down some frosties with the Metsies.

Gary Matthews Jr. interview: Wants to play everyday, glad to get change of scenery. Points out he had 50 RBIs in 300 AB’s last season. GMJ has not been talked to about his role and wants to be the opening day starter. GMJ wants to win a series title.

Minaya interview: Excited abou Barajas. Escobar is not looking good, club is still looking at free agent relievers. Omar believes in the 3 amigos (Ollie, Maine and Pelf) Niese is Omar’s favorite for the 5 spot. Ike Davis is a long shot he says, says he is ready defensively. Jacobs is here as the job is not being handed to Murph. Omar thinks Reyes batting 3 is a good move and he is likely to be a 3 hitter later in his career. Omar believes in this team, he better or he won’t be around long. Omar says Beltran is most likely back in May or June, if things go well. Sounds like this is going to be more then 40 games.

Murph: Interesting, very interesting to see how this goes. Murph is the first player that is actually sitting next to Mike. Mike points out that he did not live up to the hype that was given to him last season and that he bombed in left field. Murph batted .282 in the 2nd half last season again with no protection. Murph continually says he doesn’t care about stats he just wants to help the team win. Murph says it took 2 months to adjust to the pitchers adjusting to him and that the pitchers would not allow him to go opposite field as he has liked in his minor league career. Mike is trying to be nice but Murph just seems like he does not like him and is uncomfortable being next to him. Murph leaves by telling him to not talk so bad…lol….good job by Murph there.

All in all, not bad to watch, each day I listen to Mike I continue to dislike him more and more but nice to see alot of the guys and definitely has me pumped to watch the game today!!!

CF: Carlos, get well soon!

As spring training fast approaches I want to go around-the-horn on the projected Mets opening day lineup position by position. I will talk about my thoughts on how that position matches up and how it should be handled. Hope you enjoy.

When the news spread like wildfire that Carlos Beltran was gonna need to be shut down for the first 40 games or so to have surgery on his knee, the sky quickly began to fall in Mets land.  The reason for this is quite simple: Carlos Beltran is the best player on the team.  Losing him for any length of time could prove fatal to the Mets hopes.  This is why I think it was a good thing to have the surgery.  Yes it did unfortunately bridge last years injury woes right into this year and that’s not good for morale, but I would much rather lose Beltran for the first 40 games then the last 40.

Luckily for the Mets CF is arguably their deepest position with Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. acting as backup.  Turning to either of these guys for a little while is ok, but if either of them see prolonged action then the Mets are in trouble.  It’s imperative to get Beltran healthy and to not rush him back.  We need to know that when he gets back he is back for good.  If he comes back and then two weeks later goes down again the ramifications on team morale will be bad, and the sky will really be crashing down for Mets fans as we relive an all too familiar scenario from last year.

When healthy Beltran is one of the best centerfielders in the league.  He is also one of the under-appreciated players in the game.  If you take a minute and actually look at his stats they are really impressive.  He isn’t the guy that’s gonna win a batting title, or get chicks with the long ball.  But he will consistently hit from .280-.310, hit 20-30 dingers, and drive in 100+ runs a year.  All while playing a Gold Glove CF.  He’s really the backbone of the Mets and it’d really be a shame if he weren’t a Met beyond 2011 because of bad blood built through this injury/surgery fiasco.

Right Field: Francoeur is good medicine

As spring training fast approaches I want to go around-the-horn on the projected Mets opening day lineup position by position.  I will talk about my thoughts on how that position matches up and how it should be handled.  Hope you enjoy.

When the Mets made the deal last year to trade Ryan Church to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur in return I was not happy.  I was a Church guy and never could understand why the Mets never seemed to give him a chance.  It baffled me why they would trade for a guy and then treat him like he ran over their dog.  It was obvious that Jerry Manuel couldn’t stand Church.  I thought it was unfair and really hated to see him go.  After watching Frenchie play in 82 games for the Mets I have to admit he’s one of my favorite players.

I love the levity he brings to the team.  He likes to have fun and that helps keep baseball fun.   That’s no small thing as I think the Mets by and large have forgotten how to do that years ago.  I hate cliches but Francoeur’s arrival at CitiField was like a breath of fresh air.

The Braves had obviously given up on their hometown rightfielder.   I am not sure what they thought they saw to make them think that, but I saw nothing to indicate that in the half season I watched him.  It sure looked to me like he was a guy who really needed a change of scenery as his stats jumped right back up to the level that had people labeling him as “The Natural” in his first few seasons.  This is a guy who in his first four and a half seasons has batted .271, hit 88 homeruns, and driven in 400 RBI’s.  He had on real “down” year in 2008 and that’s why those stats are even as low as they are.  The Braves obviously felt that was more the norm then a down year.  Lets hope they were wrong.

I am not really a stats guy when it comes to analyzing players and I feel Francoeur will bring a lot more to this team then just his production on the field.  We saw this team buckle last year when Jose Reyes went down.  They seemed unable to smile, and going to work each day seemed unbearable, and these guys play a game for a living.  It’s long been documented how much “fun” Reyes can make the clubhouse.  I think Francoeur is in the same vein.  I am really hoping his approach to the game will rub off a bit onto David Wright and at the same time take some of the heat off him.  He’s not one to shy away from the media like some Mets have in the past, this will help take some of that spotlight off players like Wright.

I really enjoy watching Francoeur play.  He plays a sound fundamental game that should play well in CitiField.  I think he is a personality “plus” guy and it’s good to get players like this into the organization.  Here’s to hoping his trend back upwards during the second half of last season continues into a big 2010 for Frenchie.
