Why Wally?

Why Wally Backman? This is exact question that was posed to me by closet Metspundit.com reader and Yankee fan Brendon Henry. I figured this would be a great forum to let him and other people who are Anti-Wally, why the majority of Mets fan are pulling for Wally to be the next manager. However, before I get into my reasons, I will let you know this should be a done deal. The Wilpon’s are facing a very tough situation and are losing fans (and dollars) everyday. This is the popular move and would generate interest from a very dismayed fan base. Not only will Wally bring in fans and increase the entertainment value at Citi Field but another HUGE reason why this will happen is because Wally will take this job making the minimum just as Willie Randolph did in 2005. The Wilpon’s are not going to pay a Bobby V or a Joe Torre, $6 to 8 million if Wally will do it for $500,000. It’s that simple the Wilpon’s are cheap and this is the cheap move. It just so happens that the Wilpon’s will luck out here as the cheap move is actually the more popular move.

Okay, so now we can all agree that I made two valid points and that it is highly likely Wally will be the manager of the 2011 Mets. But why have I felt so strongly about this? For people like my friend Brendon who do not watch this club everyday, I would like you to know the first thing this team needs is some balls. Yes balls, toughness, a fire lit under them. Wally Backman is a man who will get in someone’s face and challenge their manhood. The Mets have had wussy primadonnas for a long time, and the Wally is the man to put some hair on those waxed balls. This Has Been Hard On Us

This has been a rough season. I guess this is the feeling of having a daughter and knowing she is dating a douchebag and there is nothing you can do to stop her. This season has been doomed from day one, shoot so was last season and the season before as well.

The reason I feel this way is because the leadership of this team is and has been in shambles since game 7 in 2006. We now have watched the Phils win for 4 years in a row, and as much as I hate them, they are a well ran team. They went for the gusto in dealing for the two Roy’s and are seeing the rewards for those deals as they emerge as a true threat to the champion Yankees.

Once again, I am left breaking out old VHS tapes to remember our glory days. Tonight, its September 18th, 2006. Four effing years, four effing years without playoffs. Gone are LoDuca, Glavine and Pedro. The dynasty we thought would emerge with Wright and Reyes has become one season in the sun and led us to being the joke of a franchise that we are today.

Hopefully Our Future Manager

This is absolutley AWESOME! “Let’s go get a beer, Doc.” I can’t wait for Jerry to be fired.

Ollie a Hand Full?

Here’s a great link I came across: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704002104575290951780732496.html?mod=WSJ_latestheadlines

Roller Coaster Frankie Closes Out Friars

I know the pic is of Armando Benitez but it is getting very hard to tell the difference between today’s Mets closer and the one of the turn of the century Mets. Frankie Rodriguez is starting to make every save an adventure. I don’t care about stats, he is not very good. His fastball topped at 91 last night vs. the Pads. How come other teams have guys who throw 100 in the ‘pen and in the rotation and we can’t get anyone over 91???

Frankie promptly came in and gave up a run, put the tying runs on base before striking out two Padres to end the game. Yes, he pulled this out , yes he also pulled out the Yanks but the feeling I really came up with tonight was I would have no faith what so ever in a big spot. NL East pennant, Wild Card on the line, playoff game….no way he holds a 1 or 2 run lead vs. Pujols or Tulo or Utley.

I think many Met fans feel that he is definitely a huge risk and I think he should focus a little more on getting outs then the show he tries to put on while he’s out there. It just makes me sick to see Pelf dominate for 8 innings just to see the Mets have to sweat another one out as the man I call “Roller Coaster” Frankie again gives us all heart palpitations.

Mets Sweep Phils Outta Citi

The Mets finished off their hated rivals tonight to the tune of 3 to nada to complete a sweep. The Mets also held the Phils scoreless in all three games. Our Metsies made the two time defending National Champions look like chumps. The Mets pull within two games of the Phils for first place and move into third place, one-half game behind the Bravos.

The Mets certainly have had their ups and downs this season but have shown in this home stand by defeated the two 2009 league champions 5 games to 1 that they can be for real when running on all cylinders. If the Mets can start to put together a little more consistency they can be contenders, not pretenders.

This division looks like it is going to be tight and 89 wins or so could win the division. I think Met fan have to embrace this team and realize we are going to have lots of ups and downs but we will play better with the support of our fans, as the electricity as Citi tonight was something usually lacking from the atmosphere in Flushing.

The Mets were led by Mike Pelfrey’s incredible outing and I continue to love the poise that he is showing this season. He really has picked us up big and I love watching him deal especially at Citi. Jose Reyes continued his hot streak with 3 more hits including a 2 RBI double to put the Mets up 3-0. The first run was knocked in by Jason Bay’s double off the left field wall. It looks like putting Reyes one and Bay three has worked wonders for this team. Again, I am left scratching my head when Manuel mentioned in the pre game that Reyes could be moved back eventually. Is he looking to get fired? You do not mess with the best leadoff hitter in baseball.

Anyways, the Mets have a great homestand that none of us saw but now the big challenge lies ahead. Can we defeat our road demons and continue growing as a complete, all-around team.

No Excuses In Miami

There won’t be any cold weather to blame this time, first pitches fore casted temperature is 83 degrees in Miami, Florida. There’s also no “knee injury” to blame it is put up or shut up time for Oliver Perez. Another meltdown and the prospects of Ryota Igarashi returning to the ‘pen to free up Takahashi to hit the rotation, this could be the last time we deal with “Bad game” Ollie.

Oliver at one time had been coming up big against teams like the Phils, Braves, Fish and Yankees so we will see if he can somehow find it against the Fish. However, the Fish have seen him enough and I am sure will be patient in the box.

I am curious to see what excuses they can think of if he slips up in Miami. Will it be too hot? Were the baseball left in Colorado’s humidor? Were the Marlins looking through a telescope from the bullpen? The bottom line is Ollie can no longer hide behind his 3 year-36 million dollar contract as patience is wearing very thin!

Tired Of The Excuses

I am so sick of excuses. It was cold out, it was windy, it was rainy. How about this one? Well, he hasn’t pitched in a few days. How about manning up and saying, well he just didn’t get the job done. I live in the West Coast, frequently bet on games and have the baseball package. I watch a ton of games, I just do not hear these excuses from other clubs. However, Jerry Manuel always has an excuse for something bad happening. How about saying, well K-rod just threw a ball down broadway and a little no name player took him yard for the game winner. Obviously, the two players that we most often hear excuses for are K-rod and Ollie P.

Both guys are making from 10-12 million a year. When you make that kind of money, there are no excuses, it’s either you did your job or not. In Ollie’s case he is a lost cause so I’m not even going to waste your time. But K-Rod has been bad in big spots the this year and the last half of last year. Not only is he blowing saves but he is giving up an alarming amount of long balls. I almost cringe when he comes in as I have now lost confidence in what he does.

The only question that remains that after 2011, when K-Rod and Ollie walk away through free agency, which one of them will Mejia be replacing???

More Dope Mets Tees

As you know I am huge into Met fashion so I will continue to take a look at some of the best Met tees around, this site says it all right here.
