I know it’s going to sound like hindsight but I swear you could ask my mother, the second I found out Willie Randolph was going to be replaced by Willie Randolph, I said “it’s going to be the same.” In reality, we have only gotten worse under Jerry Manuel and I think the Wilpon’s need to learn a crucial lesson when the start making plans to replace Jerry on Monday. They need a completely different attitude brought in. Jerry occassionally gets a little bit more fired up at the umpires then Willie did, but I think they bring in a very similiar laid back attitude which obviously has not worked in four years.
Players respond to the manager’s attitude and I think it was pretty certain that after the ’07 season the Mets players had given up on this regime of Willie Randolph and his coaching staff. I think it was a huge mistake to replace Willie with someone from his staff. Okay, so it may have been tough to replace him with a non-Met coach midway through the ’08 season but after suffering another collapse in 2008, there was no way Jerry should have been brought back. However, the Wilpon’s rewarded him with a two year deal which basically gave him a pass for last season’s embarrassment.
