Checking In

I’ve always listened to the old adage that if I have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. That is why I have buried my head in the sand for the last few months. With this being said, I was finally able to stomach thinking about the Mets tonight, after the Giants debacle tonight reminded me that I am a Mets fan. I put on my Shea Goodbye DVD and sure enough here I am on the pundit once again.

I figured for any of you still out there, I’d put up my feelings about the things that have happened since we saw the SF Giants clinch the Series title.

I feel that Alderson could be a good move and as many people said of the time of his hiring that he was the best available man for the job and there really wasn’t a sure fire choice out there. He has won before but was that due to him or the performance enhancers being passed around the Oakland locker room. It will be very interesting to see the small town money ball philosophy brought to New York. He is old school, has discipline and seems dedicated to turning around the image that the Mets currently have, which is well, losers, choke artists, babies, soft and spoiled. After writing that, it makes me feel that if he can at least change that atmosphere, a pretty big job will be taken care of. As I said, all in all it should be a good move, do I think Alderson will lead us to a title? Probably not, but he should at least clean up the mess that the previous administration left.

If Not Wally, Then….

With more news today, that Wally Backman is probably not going to be the choice of the Mets to be the next manager, I am going to approve of Lee Mazzilli on this election day. Lee has managerial experience, albeit not successful but again it was with Baltimore and also was a World Champion as a coach under Joe Torre.

I don’t know what happened for Mazzilli to not come back as an announcer with the Mets but hopefully these two sides are not on bad enough terms to make this happen. When hired by Baltimore, Lee was the up and coming sexy pick for a manager. I don’t think you can discredit him because of a lousy time with a lousy team.

I just think that Met fans are at an all time low with this club, at least as much as I’ve ever seen since I became a fan in 1985. I think that the manager selection needs to excite the fans and someone like Lee Mazzilli or Wally Backman would excite the fans. Whereas, Don Wakamatsu or Chip Hale’s hires would insight a riot on the blogosphers and talk radio. In order, to prevent that, the Mets need someone who the Met fan can love and at least bring back interest.

The Countdown Can Begin

If you’re wondering it’s 150 days ’til Opening Day, April 1st in Miami………

My favorite quote…..

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

Last one out – turn off the lights!

Well I wish I could say that was fun, but I can’t. What a completely abysmal season that was and I for one couldn’t be happier that it’s over.

At least now we can finally take the medicine most of us knew was coming. Finally pay the price for horrible franchise management and start to hopefully move forward. It’s not gonna get fun again quickly. We will take plenty more lumps. But at least we can work to restoring the hope to the franchise.

Talking to my boy Eddie we both agree that the difference between this year and all other disappointing years of the past was the lack of hope. Over and over the Wilpons said Omar would be back and “blah blah blah.” This took even the faintest hope from Mets fans. Why invest out time and our hearts into a team that is so obviously flawed in so many ways, especially when we have no confidence in ownership and management to do the right thing to rectify the situation. From Willie To Jerry: Much Of The Same

I know it’s going to sound like hindsight but I swear you could ask my mother, the second I found out Willie Randolph was going to be replaced by Willie Randolph, I said “it’s going to be the same.” In reality, we have only gotten worse under Jerry Manuel and I think the Wilpon’s need to learn a crucial lesson when the start making plans to replace Jerry on Monday. They need a completely different attitude brought in. Jerry occassionally gets a little bit more fired up at the umpires then Willie did, but I think they bring in a very similiar laid back attitude which obviously has not worked in four years.

Players respond to the manager’s attitude and I think it was pretty certain that after the ’07 season the Mets players had given up on this regime of Willie Randolph and his coaching staff. I think it was a huge mistake to replace Willie with someone from his staff. Okay, so it may have been tough to replace him with a non-Met coach midway through the ’08 season but after suffering another collapse in 2008, there was no way Jerry should have been brought back. However, the Wilpon’s rewarded him with a two year deal which basically gave him a pass for last season’s embarrassment. With the financial difficulties of the Mets, they let him virtually waste away the 2010 season. [Read more...]

Weekend Predictions

With the biggest news surrounding the Mets being who is going to lead the club next year, I still plan on enjoying on the field action this weekend. There are some races to still be determined and I will be watching this weekend. Any how, I figured I’d give my predictions and see how we do. I think the NL west will be determined tonight as Matt Cain clinches it and eliminates the Padres from NL west contention. I think the Phils are not going to try to put the hammer to the Bravos (you know they would pitch Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels if it was the Mets) so I feel that the Bravos will be able to hold off the Padres for the Wild Card.

I feel that the Yanks and Rays will end up tied when it is all said and done but thanks to a 10 and 8 record against the Yanks, it will be the Rays who will be the division winner and I think the Rays also hold off the Twinkies for home field advantage for the American League playoffs. Let’s see how I do and I will be back before next Wednesday with my Division Series predictions.

Why Wally?

Why Wally Backman? This is exact question that was posed to me by closet Metspundit.com reader and Yankee fan Brendon Henry. I figured this would be a great forum to let him and other people who are Anti-Wally, why the majority of Mets fan are pulling for Wally to be the next manager. However, before I get into my reasons, I will let you know this should be a done deal. The Wilpon’s are facing a very tough situation and are losing fans (and dollars) everyday. This is the popular move and would generate interest from a very dismayed fan base. Not only will Wally bring in fans and increase the entertainment value at Citi Field but another HUGE reason why this will happen is because Wally will take this job making the minimum just as Willie Randolph did in 2005. The Wilpon’s are not going to pay a Bobby V or a Joe Torre, $6 to 8 million if Wally will do it for $500,000. It’s that simple the Wilpon’s are cheap and this is the cheap move. It just so happens that the Wilpon’s will luck out here as the cheap move is actually the more popular move.

Okay, so now we can all agree that I made two valid points and that it is highly likely Wally will be the manager of the 2011 Mets. But why have I felt so strongly about this? For people like my friend Brendon who do not watch this club everyday, I would like you to know the first thing this team needs is some balls. Yes balls, toughness, a fire lit under them. Wally Backman is a man who will get in someone’s face and challenge their manhood. The Mets have had wussy primadonnas for a long time, and the Wally is the man to put some hair on those waxed balls. Minaya and Manuel To Be Fired Monday

Well the first piece of good news for this Mets fan has been hitting Twitter and the blogosphere tonight as rumors are starting to come out that Omar Minaya is not re-assigned within the organization and will be outright fired on Monday. It is also rumored not to much surprise that Jerry Manuel will not return. If you were an original reader of this site then you know that Brian and myself are both not big fans of these guys. As a matter of fact speaking for myself, my big disconnect with the Mets right now is that I felt all along that there was no way that this combination of brain trust could lead us to the playoffs. I felt that this season was doomed since we were told that these two idiots were given a pass after last season.

The idea of these two running the team, I feel zapped alot of energy out of the fans. Even as we hit our high water mark for the season as 11 games over, I knew it wouldn’t last. I feel that if the team can do the right thing and bring in a Wally Backman, that the team won’t exactly be headed for the playoffs, but at least a positive energy could exist. I feel that with a good GM and manager in place, that this team could replicate the 2005 season, the first in Willie Randolph’s tenure. The Mets, although not in the playoff race, played fun and entertaining baseball and were a team to get behind, and achieving a goal of getting the club over .500 for the first time in awhile, helped set the tone for the wonderful 2006 season. I think by 2012 with Wally in full contract and some of these terrible Minaya contract’s coming off the books could set us up for a playoff run.

This Has Been Hard On Us

This has been a rough season. I guess this is the feeling of having a daughter and knowing she is dating a douchebag and there is nothing you can do to stop her. This season has been doomed from day one, shoot so was last season and the season before as well.

The reason I feel this way is because the leadership of this team is and has been in shambles since game 7 in 2006. We now have watched the Phils win for 4 years in a row, and as much as I hate them, they are a well ran team. They went for the gusto in dealing for the two Roy’s and are seeing the rewards for those deals as they emerge as a true threat to the champion Yankees.

Once again, I am left breaking out old VHS tapes to remember our glory days. Tonight, its September 18th, 2006. Four effing years, four effing years without playoffs. Gone are LoDuca, Glavine and Pedro. The dynasty we thought would emerge with Wright and Reyes has become one season in the sun and led us to being the joke of a franchise that we are today.

Are You Still Here?

I’m back from my hiatus for the summer which felt like I visited most of the United States. I spent my summer mostly in New York and Tampa, but also made some stops in Kansas City, St. Louis and Minnesota. What can I come back and say about the Mets but I told you so. This team is stuck in the mud with its current management. It has been a long year and really a very long four years since game seven of the 2006 NLCS.

Instead of complaining and focusing on the negatives (which I plan on doing sometime in the near future), I ask are you still here? The Mets are seven games back of the Wild Card as we get closer to September. Crazier things have happened and can the Mets get hot in time to get back in this thing. I, for one think this team is dead but after watching tonight’s game, seeing timely hitting, an offense who comes back and a walk-off hit, I cannot totally throw in the towel. The excitement of the team following a win shows me that these guys still believe, so why not me too (at least for now.)

From attending games at Citi this summer, listening to WFAN and watching SNY, along with my friends opinions I find few people who seem to have any confidence. So I’m asking you are you still watching and hoping for a YA GOTTA BELIEVE miracle to make those ever so elusive playoffs.
